Green construction is not limited to solar panels, recycled lumber and rain barrels. The concrete industry has been going green for a considerable length of time. Concrete is a specific mixture of cement, sand, rock/gravel & water. Technology and product advancements over the years have aligned the concrete industry with the LEED certification system.

LEED is an international points-based system, which measures the environmental sustainability of a specific building or building project. A major change in the concrete industry has been the reduction of cement used in concrete production. This reduced amount of cement has been replaced with flyash, a by-product of coal-fired electrical plants.

Flyash used to end up in our landfills but now can make up as much as 50% of cement content in special "green mixes". The concrete used to manufacture MacKay’s products are produced using local aggregates (sand & gravel), reducing their carbon footprint even further.

Concrete outdoor furnishings are generally a "one time" purchase as time, the elements and human use, have little effect on the life of the products. Cities have used MacKay’s concrete containers, benches etc. in their public areas for decades, knowing that maintenance is minimal and the need for replacement of a concrete item is rare.

In the event a concrete bench or table is damaged it can be recycled for other uses such as new construction, roadway fill or larger pieces for erosion control.
